Trio Leads No. 18 Men's Swim/Dive During Loss at No. 4 Chicago

The 18th-ranked Hope College men's swimming and diving team took part in its final non-conference road trip of the year, taking on No. 4 University of Chicago at the Myers-McLoraine Pool on the campus of UChicago. The host Maroons were victorious by a 193.5-101.5 margin.

Freshman Luke Newcomb (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton HS), sophomore Graham Eisenmann (Ozark, Missouri / Ozark), and senior Colin Kalkman (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) all posted victories for the Flying Dutchmen, who dropped a dual meet for the first time this season.


Newcomb took first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.21 seconds, and was followed by sophomore Josh Bordovsky (Herndon, Virginia / South Lakes), who came in second after touching the wall in 57.47. 


Bordovsky also added a second-place finish in the 100 free, tying for the position with a time of 46.94 as the top three finishers touched the wall in under 47 seconds.


Eisenmann took first in the 50 free with a season-best time of 20.74. He also added a season-best 1:41.53 in the 200 freestyle as the top three finishers touched the wall within .37 seconds of one another.


Kalkman was victorious in the 200 backstroke, stopping the clock at 1:56.62. Freshman Joe Engle (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) took third, posting a time of 2:00.87.


Engle also added a second-place showing in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:57.01. Senior Conner Halberg (Novi, Michigan / Northville) placed third, finishing the distance event in 10:07.96.


In the 200 butterfly, Hope took three of the top four positions, led by sophomore Nick Suranyi (Novi, Michigan / Novi), who finished second in 1:55.70. Freshman Everett Cox (Sugar Land, Texas / Logos Prep) took third in 1:59.65, while sophomore Alex Pierce (Oswego, Illinois / Oswego) placed fourth with a time of 1:59.83.


Suranyi was also Hope's top finisher in the 100 butterfly, placing third with a time of 52.42 as the top four finishers all registered times under 53 seconds.


Senior Dallas Fisher (Highland, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) paced the Flying Dutchmen in the 200 individual medley, recording a third-place finish in 2:01.70. Fisher also led Hope in the 100 backstroke, placing fifth with a time of 51.99.


In the 500 freestyle, Cox was Hope's top finisher, touching the wall in 4:50.33 to place fourth. Junior Henry Booker (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) touched shortly after, completing his race in 4:50.46 to place fifth. 


In the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Jacob Mowers (Northville, Michigan / Northville) led Hope with a third-place showing, recording a time of 2:18.69.


In the relays, Hope was fourth in both events. The team of Fisher, Newcomb, Kalkman and Eisenmann combined for 1:33.39 in the 200 medley relay, with Eisenmann's anchor leg of 20.24 ranking as the second-fastest in the field. In the 400 freestyle relay, the team of Cox, Bordovsky, Eisenmann and Kalkman posted a time of 3:08.02.


In diving, sophomore Max Reed (Fairfield, Ohio / Fairfield) was Hope's top finisher, placing third on both the one- and three-meter boards.


Hope will wrap up the dual meet portion of its schedule next week, traveling to face No. 7 Calvin. Competition will begin at 5 p.m. at the Venema Aquatic Center on the campus of Calvin University.
