Men's Swimming and Diving Paul Thomas

No. 18 Men's Swim/Dive Wins Eight Events, Sinks Kalamazoo and Olivet

The 18th-ranked Hope College men's swimming and diving team posted a pair of MIAA victories on Saturday afternoon at Kalamazoo College, winning eight of 11 swimming events to defeat the host Hornets along with The University of Olivet.

The Flying Dutchmen outscored Kalamazoo, 154-82, while topping Olivet by a 106-15 margin.


Senior Dallas Fisher (Highlight, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central HS) won a pair of events for Hope, which improved its dual meet record to 5-0 this season. Fisher won back-to-back races, capturing the 400-yard individual medley and 200 butterfly.


In the 400 IM, Fisher touched the wall in 4:21.50, while freshman Joe Engle (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) placed second with a time of 4:24.28. In the 200 butterfly, Fisher edged out Kalamazoo's Alden Ehrhardt by .79 seconds for the win, touching the wall in 2:02.14. 


Senior Conner Halberg (Novi, Michigan / Northville) won the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:49.87, finishing over a minute ahead of the field. 


In the 50 freestyle, freshman George Marsh (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Seaholm) out-touched Kalamazoo's Avery Jones by .27 seconds with a winning time of 21.64. Junior Henry Booker (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) placed third with a time of 22.36.


Marsh also tallied a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle as Hope recorded a 1-2-3 finish. Freshman Everett Cox (Sugar Land, Texas / Logos Prep) won the event with a time of 48.39, while Marsh (48.54) and senior Colin Kalkman (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) (48.82) all finished within a half-second of each other. 


Sophomore Josh Bordovsky (Herndon, Virginia / South Lakes) won the 200 backstroke, touching the wall in 1:58.36, while sophomore Nick Suranyi (Novi, Michigan / Novi) placed second in 1:59.35. 


In the 500 freestyle, the Flying Dutchmen took the top three positions, led by Graham Eisenmann (Ozark, Missouri / Ozark), who registered a 4:48.52. Sophomore Alex Pierce (Oswego, Illinois / Oswego) finished second in 4:56.81, while sophomore Christian Hoeksema (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) placed third in 5:00.76. 


In the 200 freestyle, senior Joel Cummins (Oscoela, Indiana / Penn) was out-touched by a tenth of a second to place second with a time of 1:49.12. Kalkman finished third in 1:49.47, edging out sophomore Erik Keisling (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt), who placed fourth in 1:49.48. The top four swimmers in the event finished within four-tenths of a second of each other. 


In the 200 breaststroke, the Dutchmen took two of the top three positions. Sophomore John McHugh (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) placed second in 2:20.89, while freshman Jack Chiodini (Alma, Michigan / Alma) came in third with a time of 2:22.22. 


In diving, freshman Sam York (Plymouth, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) led Hope with a pair of second-place finishes. 


Hope also won the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Eisenmann, Cummins, Hoeksema and Kalkman won the race in 1:25.46 as the Dutchmen relay squads took the top five positions. In the 400 medley relay, Hope finished second and third, with the team of junior Samuel Albrecht (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison), Hoeksema, senior Christian Dunaitis (Commerce Township, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central), and Chiodini combining for a second-place finish with a time of 3:40.06. 


Hope will be in action next weekend, traveling to face No. 4 University of Chicago in a dual meet on Saturday, Feb. 1. Competition will begin at 1 p.m. (CDT) at the Myers-McLoraine Pool.
